Tetrapak: where it goesand how it is recycled. From production to separate collection.

At home we produce a good amount of waste intetrapak, from the fruit juice packaging, to the milk jug. But where do you throw the tetrapak?

Tetrapak: where it goes

Where does it go?
In many municipalities, the tetrapak is thrown away in the "multi-material", that is, in the bag in which you collect plastic and aluminum. In other municipalities in Italy, however, the tetrapack must be conferred with the collection of the paper. In some still, however, the tetrapak must be thrown apart ... For these reasons, it will be necessary to contact your municipal administration to be sure about where to throw the tetrapak.

What is the tetrapak made of?

Where is the ceramic thrown away?
In the undifferentiated.
Where is polystyrene thrown away?
In plastic.
Where are the shampoo bottles thrown away?
In plastic ...

Dry answers, for simple questions. So why to find out where the tetrapak is thrown away should you contact your municipality of residence? Because tetrapak is not a simple material.

First let's say thattetrapakit is not the name of a material but of the producing action. The name of the material isTetra Brik Aseptic(TBA), over time, the company name has been used to identify the material that we all know. But what is it made of?

The Tetra Brik Aseptic is made up of severallayers of plastic, aluminum and paper. Because it can't berecycledas is done with the single materials that compose it, with time, thetetrapakit has accumulated a bit of criticism.

The first programs oftetrapak recyclingthey were started only around the 90s. In 2000, the manufacturing companyTetra Pak invested 20 million baht (corresponding to 500,000 euros) for the construction of the first recycling plant of “Tetra Brik Aseptic”, built in Thailand.

Other recycling plant of thetetrapakthey are widespread all over the world. 20% of tetrapak waste produced globally is recycled in Belgium, Germany, Spain and Norway.

For recycle the tetrapack (Tetra Brik Aseptic) a preliminary process is required to separate cardboard, aluminum and plastic. The plastic is "extracted" in the form of paraffin. The recovered materials can be reused in various industries.

Even without the preliminary separation process, thetetrapakcould bereused but the areas of use are limited only to engineering equipment.

As is clear, compared to aluminum cans, glass or cardboard, tetrapak containers are much more difficult to recycle. That is why in many places they still end up in landfills, along with non-recyclable waste. Yet tetrapak is a material that can be recycled.

The Tetra Pak company said it is collaborating with governments around the world to increase the number of recycling facilities dedicated to the storage and recovery of the material.

From the processing of tetrapak new cardboard materials are born (paper for the production of envelopes, stationery items ...) and the plastic material used in the construction sector and in various industrial sectors.

Where to throw the tetrapak

Let's see where the tetrapack is thrown in the main Italian cities.

In Milan, the tetrapak must be disposed of together with the separate collection of paper and cardboard.

In Salerno, the tetrapak is thrown away with plastic, steel and aluminum. It must be delivered in translucent bags.

In Naples, as well as in Milan, the tetrapak is conferred with paper and cartons.

Even in Rome, the tetrapak must be delivered in the white paper and cardboard container.

In Caserta thetetrapak is thrownwith the multi-material, that is in the semi-transparent bag where plastics and metals are delivered.

As well as in Caserta and Salerno, also in Pisa thetetrapakit is delivered in the semi-transparent bag together with containers for yogurt, rigid packaging and other plastics, aluminum and metals.

In Florence there are blue bells in which glass, plastic, metal and tetrapak packaging can be inserted. Alternatively, the tetrapak must be conferred with the collection of the multi-material (polystyrene, cans, aluminum…).

In Bari the tetrapak is conferred with paper and cardboard.

If your city is not listed above, just do a brief search on the website of your municipality. Each administration at the beginning of the year provides a calendar of separate collection with specific instructions for the disposal of waste. Just visit the Municipality website to understand where the tetrapak is thrown.
