Originally, when it was invented, it was carbonated water with an abundant addition of quinine and was used as a medicine in prophylaxis against malaria. Over time it has become less and less rich in quinine and more used as a pleasure drink than for healing purposes. We often find an addition of syrup based on glucose, fructose and sucrose but obviously we do not send the light version in which the syrup is replaced by agents alternative sweeteners.

Tonic water: properties

The presence of quinine of tonic water can be a problem but also some advantage. This substance is indeed very useful against malaria. It is all a question of doses, those present in tonic water are obviously safe doses but it is important to remember not to drink too much, perhaps instead of water. Against the malaria the daily dose must be in the range of 500-1000mg (or 10mg / kg of body weight) to be taken every eight hours; for a 70 kg adult, this is approximately 2100 mg of quinine per day.

Quinine can also be very useful for children leg cramps but we do not get used to taking it because if we exceed it we can suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, visual and auditory disturbances. Then there are some categories of people that it is better to stay away fromtonic water, for example, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, to ensure that they do not pass this substance on to the newborn or fetus. Even those suffering from liver and / or kidney diseases are better off not abusing this substance.

In terms of nutritional characteristics, tonic water is very simple and does not contain others nutritional elements or nutrients in significant quantities. It has a lot of sugars and this is another reason why it is better not to overdo it, also for the sake of our teeth.
