The official and scientific name oferisimo is Sisymbrium officinale. This plant belongs to the large Brassicaceae family and is appreciated by those who use herbs for healing because of its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It is very often used to treat problems affecting the respiratory system. Let's find out what benefits it gives us and how we should use it to make the most of its powers.

Erisimo: property

Let's go straight to the point to try to understand what benefits this plant brings to our health. It has been considered excellent for centuries natural remedy for coughs of various kinds but is also effective on inflammations of the throat, in particular for those who smoke or for those who use their voice a lot for work such as singers and actors. There are those who also use it to deal with periods of great fatigue.

The season in which heather is most used is undoubtedly winter, but we should not underestimate the effects of air conditioning which even in the height of summer can cause us terrible sore throats and typically cold ailments such as pharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchitis. With erysism we can keep the respiratory tract as free and non-inflamed as possible and defend ourselves from both low temperatures and viruses thanks to its known anti-inflammatory properties that act on the mucosa of the respiratory tract and its expectorant, mucolytic and bacteriostatic action. It also works as a cure for those annoying colds with abundant secretion and for the influences that also involve the bronchi.

Erisimo: characteristics

Precisely because of its great effectiveness against all that are ailments that go to damage the throat and voice, erisimo is also called "singers' grass". We also find it in ancient times used to treat cases of aphonia and dysphonia related to laryngitis, pharyngitis and tracheitis.

From the studies carried out on this plant it was understood that its precious properties are linked to the presence of mucilage and sulfur compounds such as those found in horseradish and both make powerful fluidifying and expectorants of bronchial secretions.

Looking at erysimus as a plant, we can describe it as an herb with an erect stem, even half a meter tall, and petiolate basal leaves with toothed lobes, while the upper ones are whole and astate. Also very small and light yellow flowers sprout, not very much evident and collected in clusters. From the flower the fruit is born, which has an elongated shape and contains about twenty oblong and dark seeds.

If you want to find the erisimo plant you have to look for it in uncultivated areas, for example on the edge of the road or on the edge of residential areas.

Erisimo: use

There are several forms in which erysimus can be used, the most common and perhaps the most comfortable is that of decoction, effective both for humans and for our animal friends, dogs and cats, who can suffer from laryngitis in the winter period. . To prepare an infusion take about a level spoonful of heather leaves and a cup of boiling water. After ten minutes with the infused leaves we can filter everything and drink our herbal tea or give it to our pet to drink. We can sweeten it with honey which enhances the effect. This decoction is perfect if we have a sore throat, cough and hoarseness but also for the prevention.

Alternatively we can also take this plant in the form of tincture and in this case the dose is a maximum of 40 drops to be taken 2 or 3 times a day, always diluted in a little water

Erisimo: where to buy

To obtain the erisimo for the preparation of a herbal tea for us or for our dog or cat, we can happily go to a herbalist's shop where it is usually sold as a loose herb. We have already talked about the mother tincture and we can find it in herbal medicine, a third way can be that of syrup although not very practical in my opinion.

The good news is we can prepare us at home too and it is useful if the patient is a child or an elderly person. We then start again from the leaves and flowers of this plant. If you take 30 grams for each liter of water, you also need ten grams of root of Licorice and 200 g of honey. It is cooked in a bain-marie until the syrup takes on a certain consistency. The recommended dose is a couple of teaspoons twice a day, until all is gone.

Erisimo to other plants

The idea of associating different plants to obtain gods is by no means new most effective natural remedies. Let's see who the erisimo gets along with. With mallow, for example, with which we can make an effective mouthwash in case of gingivitis and stomatitis. The doses are 10 drops of mother tincture of erisimo and 100 ml of mallow infusion. If associated with Echinacea, it becomes a remedy against bronchitis, hoarseness and pharyngitis, while with propolis it treats sore throats.

Erisimo: contraindications

Although it is a natural remedy, it can have side effects that are best prevented, although not particularly serious. Who is allergic to Cruciferae and hypothyroid subjects it is better not to use this plant, in all its forms, because it can cause discomfort.
